Hire full stack developers by skill

To hire a full stack developer, give one realistic task that touches the UI, the API and the database, and see where the candidate is strong or weak. DeveloperHiring scores each layer separately and shortlists the top five. You keep the hire and pay a flat subscription, not an agency fee.

Edit the role, then see the skill matrix, screening questions and a sample coding task in about a minute.

What does a full stack developer do?

Full stack means different things at different companies. At a startup it often means owning a feature from database to button. At a larger company it can mean a frontend engineer who can also change an API. We ask which one you mean.

Which full stack skills do we test?

The skill matrix for a full stack role starts with these six areas. You can change the weights in the role builder.

Frontend

Forms, lists and state on a modern framework such as React or Vue.

Backend

An API with validation, auth checks and clear errors.

Data model

Tables, relations and migrations that match the feature.

End to end thinking

Choosing where logic lives so the feature is simple to change.

Deployment basics

Environment config, build steps and reading logs after release.

Testing

A few tests at each layer, focused on what can break.

Which screening questions work for full stack roles?

Screening questions go out by email right after a candidate enters the pipeline. Answers are scored against the skill matrix, with a written reason. Here are three from the full stack library.

  1. Q1 Tell us about a feature you shipped from database to UI. What would you change now?
  2. Q2 Where do you put validation, in the browser, the API or both, and why?
  3. Q3 How do you split time between frontend and backend when both are behind?

What does the full stack coding task look like?

Team invites feature. Add a feature where an admin invites a teammate by email, the invite expires in 7 days and the list updates live. Time limit 90 minutes.

  1. Create the invites table and migration
  2. Build the API with validation and an expiry rule
  3. Build the admin screen with pending and expired states
  4. Test the expiry rule and the main user flow

How do you tell a junior from a senior full stack developer?

The test and the AI interview look for different signals at each level. Use these to set the seniority in the role builder.

LevelWhat you should see
JuniorComfortable on one side, can make small changes on the other.
MidShips a whole feature alone with tests on each layer.
SeniorDesigns features so the next ten are easy, and mentors on both sides.

How much does a full stack developer cost?

Pay varies a lot by country, city, seniority and company. Public salary surveys show broad yearly ranges like these for mid-level to senior full stack developers. Treat them as a starting point and check current surveys for your market.

Full stack salaries depend on which side is deeper. Strong backend plus product UI skills usually sit in the upper half of the range.

How does the full stack shortlist work?

Full stack candidates often have complete side projects with a live demo. We look at commit history to see which parts they wrote. Every candidate then goes through the same screen, the full stack task and an AI interview about their own solution. Integrity signals show paste events, similarity and AI code likelihood.

The top five land on your shortlist with a scorecard each. Your team meets them and makes the offer. You keep the hire and pay a flat subscription, from $99 per month billed yearly, not an agency fee.

Questions about hiring full stack developers

The scorecard shows frontend, backend and data scores separately, so you can choose a candidate who fits the gap in your team.

You can switch to a 60 minute version that skips the migration step, or split the task into two parts.
