Hire Python developers by skill
To hire a Python developer, define the work (APIs, data or automation), test real Python code instead of reading resumes, then interview on the candidate's own solution. DeveloperHiring runs that pipeline for you. You keep the hire and pay a flat subscription, not an agency fee.
Edit the role, then see the skill matrix, screening questions and a sample coding task in about a minute.

What does a Python developer do?
Python covers very different jobs. A backend engineer builds APIs with FastAPI or Django. A data engineer moves and cleans data. An automation engineer writes scripts and tooling. We ask which one you need first, because the test is different for each.
Which Python skills do we test?
The skill matrix for a Python role starts with these six areas. You can change the weights in the role builder.
Core language
Clean functions, data structures, generators, typing with type hints, and errors handled on purpose.
Web frameworks
Routes, validation and dependency handling in FastAPI, Django or Flask, matched to your stack.
Async and concurrency
When to use asyncio, threads or a task queue, and how to avoid blocking calls.
Databases
SQL that does not create N+1 queries, migrations, and safe use of an ORM.
Testing
Pytest fixtures, mocks at the right boundary, and tests that fail for the right reason.
Packaging and tooling
Virtual environments, dependency pinning, linting and a readable project layout.
Which screening questions work for Python roles?
Screening questions go out by email right after a candidate enters the pipeline. Answers are scored against the skill matrix, with a written reason. Here are three from the Python library.
- Q1 Tell us about an API you built in Python. How did you validate input and return errors?
- Q2 A FastAPI endpoint is slow under load. What do you check first, and in what order?
- Q3 When would you choose a task queue over asyncio for background work?
What does the Python coding task look like?
Rate-limited order API. Build a small FastAPI service that accepts orders, validates them and limits each customer to 10 requests per minute. Time limit 75 minutes.
- Model the order with type hints and validation
- Store orders in SQLite through a repository layer
- Add a per-customer rate limit with a clear 429 response
- Write pytest tests for the happy path and the limit
@app.post("/orders", status_code=201)
async def create_order(order: OrderIn, repo: Repo = Depends(get_repo)):
if limiter.hit(order.customer_id):
raise HTTPException(429, "Too many requests")
return await repo.save(order)

The test and the AI interview look for different signals at each level. Use these to set the seniority in the role builder.
| Level | What you should see |
|---|---|
| Junior | Writes working functions with some help, follows the project layout, adds basic tests. |
| Mid | Owns an endpoint end to end, handles edge cases, writes useful tests without being asked. |
| Senior | Designs the service boundary, plans for load and failure, and explains trade-offs in plain words. |
How much does a Python developer cost?
Pay varies a lot by country, city, seniority and company. Public salary surveys show broad yearly ranges like these for mid-level to senior Python developers. Treat them as a starting point and check current surveys for your market.
Python roles that lean toward data or machine learning usually sit at the top of the range, while scripting and automation roles often sit lower.
| Region | Typical range |
|---|---|
| United States | about 100,000 to 170,000 USD |
| Western Europe | about 50,000 to 90,000 EUR |
| Latin America and Eastern Europe, remote | about 35,000 to 75,000 USD |
| India | about 12,000 to 40,000 USD |

How does the Python shortlist work?
Good Python candidates often show their work in public repositories, published packages and data notebooks. We read that public code next to the CV. Every candidate then goes through the same screen, the Python task and an AI interview about their own solution. Integrity signals show paste events, similarity and AI code likelihood.
The top five land on your shortlist with a scorecard each. Your team meets them and makes the offer. You keep the hire and pay a flat subscription, from $99 per month billed yearly, not an agency fee.
