Toptal pricing has two parts: a flat platform subscription of $79 a month, charged once you go ahead with talent matching, and the rate for the developer you engage, which Toptal quotes per engagement and does not publish. Third-party estimates put most software developers on Toptal at roughly $60 to $150 an hour, with senior and niche specialists above that. For one full-time developer, that works out to about $125,000 to $312,000 a year.
That range is wide because Toptal prices each match on its own. The rest of this article breaks down what you pay for, what a year actually costs at different rates, the costs that are easy to miss, and when it is cheaper to hire the developer yourself. If you already know you want a permanent engineer, our Toptal alternative for hiring full-time developers page compares the two models side by side.
How much does Toptal cost?
Here is what Toptal states publicly, and what comes from outside estimates. We keep the two apart on purpose, because vendor blogs that cover Toptal pricing often mix them.
| Cost item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Platform subscription | $79 per month, charged when you proceed with matching | Toptal FAQ |
| Developer rate | Quoted per engagement, billed as hourly, part-time or full-time | Toptal pricing page |
| Typical developer rate | About $60 to $150 an hour, senior specialists higher | Third-party estimates |
| Recruiting or termination fee | None listed | Toptal pricing page |
| Trial | Up to two weeks per engagement, not billed if you are not satisfied | Toptal FAQ |
| Deposit | Some third-party sources report a refundable deposit before matching; not listed on Toptal's current FAQ | Third-party reports |
Billing is usually twice a month on Net 10 terms, and Toptal accepts cards, ACH, wires and PayPal. You can cancel the subscription at any time. Before you budget, ask Toptal for a written quote for your exact role, seniority and hours, because the rate is the number that drives everything else.

What are Toptal's hourly rates for developers?
Toptal does not publish a rate card. What you pay is a blended rate that covers the developer's pay and Toptal's margin, and Toptal sets it per match. Outside trackers and buyers who share quotes describe most developer engagements at around $60 to $150 an hour. The usual drivers are the same ones you see on any hiring market:
- Seniority. A developer with ten years of production experience costs more than one with three.
- Stack. Machine learning, security, blockchain and some enterprise platforms sit at the top of the range. General web roles usually sit lower.
- Location of the developer. Toptal's network is global, and the rate reflects where the developer lives and what they would earn locally.
- Hours. Senior developers on networks like this often prefer steady blocks of 20 or 40 hours a week, and short or irregular engagements can be harder to fill.
Toptal does not disclose its margin. Any percentage you read online is an outside estimate, so treat it as a guess, not a fact.
What does a Toptal developer cost per year?
The hourly rate looks manageable until you multiply it out. Here is the yearly cost at three rates, for full-time (40 hours) and part-time (20 hours) engagements over 52 weeks, plus twelve months of the $79 subscription.
| Hourly rate | Part-time, 20 hours a week | Full-time, 40 hours a week |
|---|---|---|
| $60 | $63,348 | $125,748 |
| $100 | $104,948 | $208,948 |
| $150 | $156,948 | $312,948 |
These are illustrations, not quotes. Real engagements include holidays and weeks off, so actual billed hours are often a little lower. The point is the order of magnitude: one full-time Toptal developer at a mid-range rate costs about as much as a senior US engineer's salary plus benefits, and the cost keeps running for as long as the work lasts.

For a role that lasts more than a few months, usually yes, but the honest answer depends on who you compare with.
Compare like with like. Many Toptal developers live outside the US, so the fair comparison for a $60 an hour engagement is a direct remote hire in a similar region, not a San Francisco salary. Public salary surveys put mid to senior developers in Latin America and Eastern Europe at very roughly $35,000 to $75,000 a year, which is well under $125,000. Against a US salary of $150,000, employer taxes and benefits often add 20 to 30 percent, so the true cost lands near $180,000 to $195,000. That is cheaper than a $100 an hour Toptal engagement and more expensive than a $60 one.
What direct hiring adds is the work Toptal does for you: finding candidates, checking their skill and running the first interviews. That is where a hiring tool comes in. On DeveloperHiring, the Startup plan costs $1,188 a year billed yearly and covers up to two new developer roles a month. It sources candidates, runs a coding test with hidden tests and an AI interview about the candidate's own code, and hands you a ranked top five. You then hire the developer at their salary, with no markup on their hours.
Once the person is hired, the cost of getting them productive is the same either way. A short structured plan for onboarding and training new engineers matters more for a permanent hire than for a contractor, because you keep the result.
What costs do Toptal buyers miss?
The invoice is clear, but a few costs only show up later.
- The rate never stops. With a salaried hire, recruiting is a one-time cost. With a network, the margin is paid on every hour, every week, for as long as the developer works with you.
- Converting to full-time. Toptal says hiring a developer full-time is possible in most cases, with terms worked out with Toptal. Ask about those terms before the engagement starts, not after a year of good work.
- Your own time. Toptal does the vetting, but your team still writes the brief, meets the developer, reviews code and manages the work. Budget for that time the same way you would with an employee.
- Trial churn. The no-risk trial is useful. If the first two matches do not fit, though, you lose weeks of calendar time, even if you pay nothing for them.
When is Toptal pricing worth it?
Toptal is worth the money when speed and flexibility matter more than total cost. That covers a project with a fixed end date, a gap while you hire permanently, a specialist skill you need for a few months, or a company that does not want to employ engineers at all. In those cases you are paying for a pre-vetted person who can start soon and for the freedom to stop.
It is a poor fit when the role is a core seat on your team. If you expect the developer to stay for years, the hourly margin adds up to more than a salary plus a hiring tool within the first year, and the engineer never becomes part of the company. That is the case where it makes sense to use a Toptal alternative built for direct hiring, or to compare against an agency using our breakdown of recruiting agency fees.
How to get the best price if you do use Toptal
- Write a tight brief. State the stack, seniority, hours and time zone overlap. Vague briefs get matched to senior generalists at senior rates.
- Ask for the rate in writing before the trial. Compare it with a direct hire in the same region, not with a US salary.
- Use the trial properly. Give the developer a real task in week one so you can judge them before you are billed.
- Set a review date. At three months, decide whether the role is temporary or permanent. If permanent, start a direct search while the contractor keeps the work moving.
If you go the direct route, the first step takes about a minute: paste the role into the box at the top of this page and you get the skill matrix, screening questions and a sample coding task. Our stack guides show the tests we run for Python, React, Node.js, Java, Go and twelve other stacks.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Toptal charge per hour?
Toptal does not publish hourly rates. It quotes each engagement on its own. Third-party estimates put most software developers at roughly $60 to $150 an hour, with senior and specialist roles such as machine learning or security above $150. Ask Toptal for a written quote for your exact role and hours.
Does Toptal charge a fee?
Yes. Toptal charges a flat $79 monthly platform subscription once you proceed with talent matching, on top of the developer's rate. Its pricing page lists no recruiting fee and no termination cost, and each engagement starts with a trial of up to two weeks that is not billed if you are not satisfied.
Is Toptal more expensive than Upwork?
Usually, yes. Upwork is an open marketplace where freelancers set their own rates and you do the vetting yourself, so prices range from very low to very high. Toptal screens developers before you see them and charges for that in its rate. You pay more per hour for less of your own screening time.
Does Toptal take a cut from developers?
Toptal bills you one rate that covers both the developer's pay and Toptal's margin. It does not publish how that rate is split. Percentages quoted online are outside estimates, not figures Toptal has disclosed, so treat them with care.
Is Toptal worth it for a startup?
For a short project or a fast stopgap, it can be. For a startup's core engineering seats, it is usually cheaper to hire directly, because the network margin is paid on every hour for as long as the developer works with you. A flat hiring plan plus a salary costs less from the first year.
